No photo prepares you for the first sight of the karst towers rolling to the horizon. Guilin is the gateway city; Yangshuo, two hours downriver, is the base for cycling, bamboo rafts and climbing. Everything here is about the water and the hills — budget your days accordingly.

Li River cruise / Yangdi–Xingping rafts
漓江
The 4–5 h cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the classic; the 1.5 h motorised bamboo raft section at Yangdi–Xingping is the tighter, more dramatic alternative.
Time neededHalf day
TicketLarge cruise ¥215–270 by class · Yangdi–Xingping raft ~¥216/raft (4 seats, ¥54 each).
Tip — Book official tickets through the pier counters, hotel desks or reputable platforms; morning light on the water is best.
Xingping ancient town & the ¥20 note view
兴坪古镇
The exact bend of the river photographed on the back of the ¥20 banknote — climb the hill behind town for the full panorama.
Time needed2 h
TicketTown free · viewpoints ¥20–60.
Tip — Pair with the Yangdi–Xingping raft for a half-day that beats the long cruise.
Yangshuo West Street & countryside
阳朔西街
West Street is touristy but the surrounding villages and Yulong River are the real draw: bike paths between paddy fields and peaks.
Time neededHalf day
TicketStreet free · Yulong River raft ~¥200/raft · bike rental ¥20–50/day.
Tip — Cycle the Yulong River loop early; the bridges and villages are empty before 09:00.

Time neededFull day

Tip — Green mirrors May–July, gold harvest late Sep–mid Oct; the Ping'an village side is the easiest logistics.
Reed Flute Cave
芦笛岩
A floodlit limestone cavern of columns and pools five minutes from the city — a rainy-day classic.
Time needed1–1.5 h
Ticket¥90.
Tip — Sells itself short on the outside; the lit interior is genuinely spectacular.
Two Rivers & Four Lakes night cruise
两江四湖
An evening circuit of Guilin's lakes and the Li River through the city, with pagodas lit up.
Time needed1.5 h
Ticket¥185–235.

When to go
| Period | What to expect |
|---|
| Apr – Oct | Green peaks and full rivers; summer is lush and hot. |
| May – Jun | Highest water — most dramatic falls and mist, but pack rain gear. |
| Sep – Oct | Clear skies, harvest gold in the terraces. |
| Nov – Mar | Grey and low water; quieter and cheaper, still photogenic. |
Getting there & away
Guilin Liangjiang (KWL) airport has wide domestic and some international links. High-speed rail from Guilin to Yangshuo is 30 min; to Hong Kong West Kowloon ~3.5 h.
What to eat
- Guilin rice noodles — ¥6–10 a bowl — eaten for breakfast by the whole city.
- Beer fish — Yangshuo's specialty, whole fish braised in local beer.
- Oil tea — Gongcheng-style 'tea soup' with puffed rice — an acquired, worthwhile taste.
Watch out for
- 'Free' day tours bundle you into silk or tea shops; pay for what you actually want, piece by piece.
- Unlicensed raft touts at the riverbanks undercut official prices and skip the safety gear.
- The Li River cruise and the Yangdi–Xingping raft are different products — decide before booking, both are good.
- Longji terraces involve real stairs and altitude (up to 1,100 m); carry water and skip flip-flops.
