Zhangjiajie

The floating mountains that inspired Avatar

✓ 6 must-see sights📅 3 days✓ Verified Nov 1, 2026

Three thousand sandstone pillars rise out of the mist like nothing else on earth — the real landscape behind Pandora. This is China's most physical big-name sight: plan three days, wear real shoes, and treat the cable cars as part of the experience rather than a cop-out.

Must-see sights

Tickets below are the official standard adult prices at the time of checking. Real-name booking means your passport is the ticket — book under your exact passport name and carry the booklet itself. Prices checked Nov 1, 2026 — operators change them without notice, always confirm on the official site before paying.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan)

张家界国家森林公园

The core Unesco site: Yuanjiajie's 'Avatar' pillars, Golden Whip Stream, Tianzi Mountain. One ticket covers four days including the shuttle buses.

Time needed2 days
Ticket¥239 for a 4-day pass incl. shuttle buses · cable cars/lift extra (e.g. Bailong lift ¥72 up, Tianzi cable car ¥72).

Tip — Two main entrances: the Forest Park gate (south) and Wulingyuan gate (east). Book the ¥239 pass with your passport online; avoid holiday weeks.

Bailong Elevator

百龙天梯

A 326-m glass lift bolted to the cliff face, shooting you from the valley to Yuanjiajie in under two minutes.

Time needed—
Ticket¥72 one way up / ¥62 down.

Tip — Ride up, walk, then take the cable car down — saves knees and queues both ways.

Tianmen Mountain

天门山

The mountain over the city: the world's longest cable car (7.4 km) to a cliff walkway and the famous 999-step 'Heaven's Gate' arch.

Time neededHalf–full day
Ticket¥278–298 by route (A/B/C), cable car included.

Tip — Book the exact route and time slot in advance; the city-centre cable car queue is the bottleneck.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon & glass bridge

张家界大峡谷玻璃桥

The 430-m glass-bottom bridge over a green canyon — walk it, or add the zipline and canyon trail below.

Time neededHalf day
TicketCanyon + bridge ¥219.

Tip — No heels, no phones in hand while walking; they check. Timed entry, book ahead.

Golden Whip Stream

金鞭溪

The gentle 7.5 km valley walk under 300-m pillars, with curious macaques for company.

Time needed2.5 h
TicketIncluded in park pass.

Tip — Do it downhill from the park gate in the morning; keep food zipped away from the monkeys.

Fenghuang Ancient Town

凤凰古城

Four hours away but the perfect add-on: stilted houses over the Tuo River, night lanterns, Miao culture.

Time needed1 day
TicketTown free · combined sights ticket ¥128 optional.

Tip — Stay one night — Fenghuang's lights are the point, and day trips see only half.

A working itinerary

  • Day 1 — Forest Park south side: Golden Whip Stream, Bailong lift, Yuanjiajie at dusk.
  • Day 2 — Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie by shuttle and cable car; descend by lift.
  • Day 3 — Tianmen Mountain morning, glass bridge afternoon if energy remains.

When to go

PeriodWhat to expect
Apr – JunMist and cloud seas — the Avatar effect peaks in spring.
Sep – OctClear and cool, golden light on the pillars.
Jul – AugGreen and busy; school-holiday crowds are heavy.
Dec – FebSnow on the pillars is rare and spectacular; some facilities reduce hours.

Getting there & away

Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYX) airport and the high-speed rail station (Changsha 3 h, Guangzhou 5.5 h). The park is 40 min from the city by bus or didi.

What to eat

  • Three-pot stew (sanguo) — Wax meat, tofu and radish stewed in a clay pot for the table.
  • Tujia bacon — Smoke-cured pork, the mountain staple.
  • Kiwifruit — The region grows a third of China's — juice and fresh fruit everywhere.

Watch out for

  • Do not accept 'free' guides or photo help at the gates; commission-driven routes follow.
  • The park is genuinely big — 20,000+ steps a day is normal. Cable cars are not cheating; legs are finite.
  • Macaques will snatch bags and phones: nothing dangles, food stays packed.
  • Buy only official ticket types (park pass, Tianmen A/B/C); third-party 'bundles' often double-book your day.
