West Lake has been China's most painted landscape for a thousand years, and it costs nothing to walk its causeways. Hangzhou layers tea villages, temples and the Grand Canal around that water — and it is only 45 minutes by train from Shanghai.

The village that grows China's most famous green tea on terraces above the lake. Free to walk; tastings are free if you are polite.
Time needed2–3 h

Xixi National Wetland Park
西溪国家湿地公园
A calm maze of waterways east of the lake — boat paths, persimmon trees, herons.
Time neededHalf day
Ticket¥80 (boat extra).
Tip — Pick the weekend-free East zone if you only want a walk.
Hefang Street & Southern Song heritage
河坊街
Reconstructed Song-dynasty shop street — herbal medicine halls, silk, snacks, and the Southern Song imperial street below the surface.
Time needed1–2 h

Tip — Snack here before walking to the lake; the state-run pharmacy museum is genuinely interesting.
A working itinerary
- Day 1 — Lakeside circuit on foot or by bike, Leifeng Pagoda for sunset, Hefang Street dinner.

When to go
| Period | What to expect |
|---|
| Mar – May | Blossom and fresh tea — the classic postcard window. |

| Jun – Aug | Hot, humid, lotus season; rain showers pass quickly. |
| Dec – Feb | Quiet, bare, occasionally snow — the 'broken bridge snow' scene is legendary. |
Getting there & away
Hangzhou East station is 45 min from Shanghai by train. Xiaoshan airport (HGN) handles international routes. Metro covers the lake's edge; didi is cheap.
What to eat
- West Lake vinegar fish — Sweet-sour carp, the lake's signature dish — split opinions, worth trying.
- Longjing shrimp — River shrimp stir-fried with fresh tea leaves.
- Dongpo pork — Braised pork belly named for the poet who governed here.
Watch out for
- "Tea ceremony" invitations from friendly strangers near the lake are a well-known scam — decline politely.
- Boat touts on the lake path charge 3–5× the official rate; use the official piers.
- The lake circuit is 15 km — do not attempt all of it on foot in one afternoon; bikes or the sightseeing carts help.
- Longjing village roadside 'tasting rooms' push overpriced tins; buy sealed packets in the co-op shop.
