Nine classical gardens, 2,500 years of canal city, and the most atmospheric water towns in the delta — all within 25 minutes of Shanghai by train. Suzhou rewards slow walkers: the gardens are designed to unfold frame by frame, moon gate by moon gate.

Tickets below are the official standard adult prices at the time of checking. Real-name booking means your passport is the ticket — book under your exact passport name and carry the booklet itself. Prices checked Nov 1, 2026 — operators change them without notice, always confirm on the official site before paying.
Humble Administrator's Garden
拙政园
The largest and most celebrated of Suzhou's gardens — ponds, pavilions and borrowed views, laid out in 1509. Unesco-listed.
Time needed2 h
Ticket¥80 peak / ¥70 off-season · timed reservation required.
Tip — Book on the official WeChat account or via Trip.com; day caps sell out in high season. Morning light is best.
Master of the Nets Garden
网师园
The compact masterpiece — half a hectare that contains an entire landscape, with evening performances in season.
Time needed1 h
Ticket¥40 peak / ¥30 off-season.
Tip — Best on a weekday afternoon when tour groups thin out; it shows the gardener's art at its most precise.
Lingering Garden
留园
The other Unesco giant: corridors that compress and release space, a famous cloud-cap rockery.
Time needed1.5 h
Ticket¥55 peak / ¥45 off-season.
Tip — Combine with the canal walk at Shantang Street, 10 minutes away by taxi.
Tiger Hill (Huqiu)
虎丘
A leaning Song-era pagoda on a hill where the founder of Suzhou is said to be buried — the city's emblem.
Time needed2 h
Ticket¥60 peak / ¥50 off-season.
Tip — Go at opening for the empty stone road; the sword-testing pond legend is fun even if you discount it.
Pingjiang Road & Shantang Street
平江路 · 山塘街
Two parallel canal streets — whitewashed houses, stone bridges, teahouses, boat songs at dusk.
Time needed2–3 h
TicketFree.
Tip — Pingjiang for atmosphere, Shantang for the evening light show along the water.
Suzhou Museum
苏州博物馆
I.M. Pei's final homecoming project: a modern garden of stone and light holding 2,500 years of local treasure. Free, reserved, and gorgeous.
Time needed1.5–2 h
TicketFree · timed reservation required.
Tip — Book the official account days ahead; it sits right next to the Humble Administrator's Garden — pair them.
A working itinerary
- Day 1 — Humble Administrator's Garden at opening, Suzhou Museum, Pingjiang Road evening with a boat ride.

When to go
| Period | What to expect |
|---|
| Apr – May | Mild, blossom, the gardens at their freshest. |

| Jun – Jul | Plum rain and heat — gardens are shaded but humid. |
| Nov – Mar | Cold and quiet; the museum and tea houses carry the day. |
Getting there & away
Suzhou station is 25–30 min from Shanghai by high-speed rail, 4.5 h from Beijing. The old town is compact; taxis and didi cover everything under ¥20.
What to eat
- Squirrel-shaped mandarin fish — Sweet-sour whole fish scored to bloom like a flower.
- Suzhou noodles — Breakfast bowls with seasonal toppings — try the shrimp and eel.
- Mooncakes — Fresh-baked from late August, meat or sweet.
Watch out for
- Garden tickets are date- and name-specific; do not buy for a 'flexible' day.
- Water-town day tours that promise 'Zhouzhuang + 4 stops' spend most of the day in silk shops.
- Rickshaw 'historic tours' start cheap and end with commissioned teahouse visits; agree the route and price first.
- The museum and Humble Administrator's Garden are two separate reservations — do not assume one buys the other.
